Revisiting the hardening of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum at TeV energies

چکیده
Measurements of cosmic rays by experiments such as ATIC, CREAM, and PAMELA indicate a hardening of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum at TeV energies. In our recent work (Thoudam & Hörandel 2012a), we showed that the hardening can be due to the effect of nearby supernova remnants. We showed it for the case of proton and helium. In this paper, we present an improved and detailed version of our previous work, and extend our study to heavier cosmic-ray species such as boron, carbon, oxygen, and iron nuclei. Unlike our previous study, the present work involves a detailed calculation of the background cosmic rays and follows a consistent treatment of cosmic-ray source parameters between the background and the nearby components. Moreover, we also present a detailed comparison of our results on the secondary-to-primary ratios, secondary spectra, and the diffuse gamma-ray spectrum with the results expected from other existing models, which can be checked by future measurements at high energies.

Anomaly in the cosmic-ray energy spectrum at GeV–TeV energies
Recent measurements of cosmic rays by various experiments have found that the energy spectrum of cosmic rays is harder in the TeV region than at GeV energies. The origin of the spectral hardening is not clearly understood. In this paper, we discuss the possibility that the spectral hardening might be due to the effect of re-acceleration of cosmic rays by weak shocks associated with old supernov...
متن کاملNearby supernova remnants and the cosmic ray spectral hardening at high energies
Recent measurements of cosmic ray spectra of several individual nuclear species by the CREAM, TRACER and ATIC experiments indicate a change in the spectral index of the power laws at TeV energies. Possible explanations among others include non-linear diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays, different cosmic ray propagation properties at higher and lower energies in the Galaxy and the presen...
متن کاملCosmic - Ray Electrons and the Diffuse Gamma - Ray Spectrum
Short Title: Cosmic-ray electrons and diffuse gamma-ray spectrum 1 Abstract The bulk of the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission above a few tens of GeV has been conventionally ascribed to the decay of neutral pions produced in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Cosmic-ray electrons may, however, make a significant contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum at high energies, and even ...
متن کاملStrong Neutrino - Nucleon Interactions at Ultrahigh Energies as a Solution to the Gzk Puzzle ∗
After a short review of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray puzzle – the apparent observation of cosmic rays originating from cosmological distances with energies above the expected Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff 4 × 10 19 eV – we consider strongly interacting neutrino scenarios as an especially interesting solution. We show that all features of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum from 10 17 e...
متن کاملCosmic Ray Spectrum “Knee”: A Herald of New Physics?
We argue that the knee in the cosmic ray spectrum at energies E > ∼ 10 15.5 eV is due to “new physics”, namely to a channel in the high energy ( > ∼ TeV in the CM) proton interactions hitherto unaccounted for in estimating the energies of the air shower cosmic rays. The new interaction transfers part of the primary particle’s energy to modes which do not trigger the experimental arragement (neu...
